Bánki György: A köd

„Egyszer megláttam a ködöt
A nagy fényességek mögött.”

Ugyanilyen tanácstalanul tévelyeg Fellini Amarcordjában a nagypapa a metafizikussá nehezedő ködben.
Ilyenek ezek a képek.
Szűcs makacsul következetes, saját belső fejlődésének megfelelni kívánó alkotó, aki a művein keresztül tanulja a világot.

György Bánki: The Fog

'Once I saw the fog /Behind the great lucidity.’
(Attila József: From Fog, From Silence)

One of the major achievements of Soviet cartoon animation is the cartoon Hedgehog in the Fog, the mirror of a deeply existential distress, that of being lost. Hedgehog sets off to visit his friend, Bear but gets lost in the enormous fog. On his journey, Which temporarily becomes timeless and uncomfortably mystic, he is accompanied by agonizing fear and the hope of a safe arrival until the end that brings relief. The grandfather is just as lost in the metaphysically heavy fog in Fellini's Amarcord. He has no idea where he might be. Perhaps this is the fluffy hereafter - he suspects until from the mist a rider appears from whom he learns that he is standing outside his own house. Sometimes it happens that we keep repeating a word until we lose the familiar meaning, it becomes an empty heap of sounds and we have difficulties finding the way back to the semantics. These pictures are like that. They are born out of the wedlock of magical and realistic, obscure and apparent. They are standing on the border of oblivion and evocation, and we do not know if the memories, the seized postcard-moods are on their way out of our minds or are being engraved therein in a new way. Attila
Szűcs paints the borderline, the frontier between conscious and subconscious, visible and invisible, existent and non-existent. He
paints something in an elusive, obscure unworldly space. What is
that something related to? How is that something? And what is
there where the somethings end?

In David Lynch's Twin Peaks manifest reality and the realm behind reality are separated by a red velvet curtain, a nocturnal apparition in the thick forest. Attila Szűcs creates pictures from a point of view from where it is impossible to judge whether we are still on this side of the curtain, or carelessly we have roved to the other side. As if he was mingling together two, furiously incompati¬ble dimensions with a seemingly meek gesture. So that we could just watch what is to happen. In the meantime he confronts us as well: the existence of existence and the objects may be ungrounded but it is at least unsubstantial, and when we are remembering all we are doing is try to hold on to the evaporated moments. When I am looking at these paintings I anticipate the subatomic silence, ad absurdum the incomprehensible Nothingness filling the void. The thing that all our important questions have always been about.
So in the paintings there is silence and loneliness. Sometimes it
is the silence and loneliness of objects, sometimes that of isolated persons. It is not very agreeable and anyhow: it is not fitting to do something like that. There is no overdose of aesthetics, no extra embellishment, no desire to be loved, no detective like revelations.
I can not hear the commercial cries of 'buy me'. Szűcs is a stubbornly consequent artists, who wishes to comply with his 'own inner progress, and who studies the world through his own works. And who one day will perhaps arrive at his friend, Bear. But that will not be the subject of art historical discourse,"
